Healthy Development
Grant writing exercise:
Working in small groups, you will create a grant application. All groups will follow the “Community Grant Funds Guidelines” from the Toledo Community Foundation. The
intent of this assignment is to develop greater knowledge about preparing a grant application. Remember to document any references in the body of your application.
Please use citations (rather than quotations) and follow the latest citation format styles of the American Psychological Association (APA). Your final grant
application involves three components:
1) Letter of Intent (LOI), sometimes referred to as a letter of inquiry. The LOI should not exceed three pages, single spaced. A good LOI describes in summary
form why you need the funding (i.e. problem statement), what your proposed solution is, and the qualifications of your personnel. More guidance on LOI construction can
be found on www.grantspace.org.
2) The second component of your project is a formal grant application, including a budget. The formal application should follow the guidelines established by the
Toledo Community Foundation for section titles and word limits. The requested budget should not exceed $10,000.
3) The third component is a PowerPoint presentation explaining why the funding agency should grant your request. Your PowerPoint presentation will be evaluated on
the basis of content, presentation effectiveness and visual appeal. The PowerPoint presentations will be evaluated (graded) by a panel. The members of the panel
change from year to year. In the past, the panel has consisted of the Dean of the College of Health & Human Services at BGSU and other professors proficient in grant
writing. You will have 15 minutes to give your presentation. An additional five (5) minutes will be allotted for questions from the evaluators. The student
presentations will be made during the last two weeks of class. Please refer to the end of the syllabus for the Grant Project grading rubric.
You are encouraged to discuss your grant application with me. You are required to obtain my clearance before embarking on your project. You may develop any project
that addresses any established need in your community, as long as your project is in-line with the funding priorities of the Toledo Community Foundation. Remember that
writing proficiency, including clarity and being concise, is an important component of successful grant applications. With computer assisted word processing there is
no reason for incorrect spelling; please avoid all typos and be attentive to grammar, syntax and pronoun agreement.
