There are numerous amicus briefs (friend of the court) on file as well. You are not required to read those, but they may provide additional insight. You may also review news articles, editorials and other sources for information regarding the case. Cite to any sources you rely upon them.
Oral arguments are currently scheduled for October 30, 2018. You may listen to the audio of the arguments, or review the transcript for insight into the thoughts of the Justices.
The Paper: You should write a paper of approximately 700-900 words. Divide the paper into the following topics. Include the caption for each section.
Background: A brief description of the facts that lead up to the case being heard. Analysis: Set forth your analysis of the issues. Cite to precedent when possible. If
you rely on any sources be sure to cite to the authority. Ruling: Set forth your ruling on the case.
Effect: Describe how the court’s ruling may impact individuals and businesses alike.
Prediction: Lastly predict how you believe the Supreme Court will rule. You may include the vote count, or even how you believe certain justices will rule.
Your grade will be based upon the thoroughness of your analysis. Address both side’s arguments and reasoning when making your ruling. The decision you make, meaning which side you rule in favor, will not impact your grade.
