Submission of a reflective account via Turnitin. This will be graded by xxxx marking team. The detailed guidance follows.
Assignment Question:
Produce a 1,500 (+/- 10%) word reflective account to demonstrate how you participated in infection control procedures to maintain the wellbeing of one of your patients.
Using Gibbs Modified reflective cycle, (see introduction to the module and marking grid) consider an episode of care in your practice learning opportunity.
You then reflect on how you participated in the prevention of infection for that patient. Examples of this could be carrying out aseptic non touch technique for an injection/dressing change/catheter care /removal of any sutures or cannulas. Or how you prevented cross infection during this episode of care for example bed making/hygiene/mouth care etc. This list is not exhaustive.
You need to demonstrate that you have covered the learning outcomes:
e) Understand the principles and techniques involved in direct patient care in relation to infection control principles.
f) Contribute to enhancing the health and wellbeing of service users by the application of nursing skills.
h) Review own strengths and learning opportunities and regularly monitor learning progress.

N.B. The other learning outcomes are achieved through attendance at Mandatory Skills – these are checked on the database by your PAT.

The headings you should use are the ones discussed in the Introduction to the module and also outlined on the marking grid. Please use the headings to help you in your work. Leave the headings in your submitted work. You do not need to give an introduction – this is the context. You do not need to state the model of reflection you are using.
Follow the confidentiality policy. Do not give the name of ward or Trust. If using policies from the Trust reference as “ Local Trust”.

As this is a reflective piece you should use the first person. This is still an academic piece of work so do not use colloquialisms e.g. don’t , can’t , OK etc.

Harvard referencing system must be used. Reference list should be single line spaced.

Structure

Context 10%

This needs to be clear and concise. Here you explain the context of the situation i.e. the episode of care and what you are reflecting on. This gives you and the reader a focus for the analysis section.

Who, what, when why?

Thoughts 5%

Tells the reader and allows you to reflect on what you were thinking at the time and afterwards. You consider if these thoughts affected what you did. You should also show awareness of what the patient may have been thinking and if this affected how you gave care.

Feelings 5 %

Tells the reader and also helps you to be self- aware and empathetic with how the patient may feel in the situation. Again you should state how this affected what you did/said.

Evaluation 10%

Here you make a judgment on whether this episode of care went as planned. To make this a mixture of objectivity and subjectivity you should include evidence or a reference to support you points.

Analysis 40%

This is a very important part of the reflection where you demonstrate your ability to look at the episode of care and question why you did what you did and why this is important – through your reading you should find supporting references. You may also find support for how you might have done this differently to enhance patient care or your confidence. This type of information will be useful when looking at and supporting your reframe. Remind yourself of the elements you are analysing and the learning outcomes and grading criteria for level 4. This is about why you did what you did, as described in the context.

Reframe 10%

The reframe is where you consider what you might have done differently and any alternative approaches. This will need to be evidenced from your reading as good practice.
Identification of learning and future action plan for practice and learning 20%

Here you need to think about what you have learned from your reflection, why it is important and how you plan take this forward in your patient care/personal development. This needs to be based on the reflection and personal to you. There needs to be a clear rationale as to why this learning is important and how you will transfer this to your practice. Here you should also identify any development needs and how you plan to achieve them.

Preparation

In preparation you should read around reflective practice and writing.

Look at how to write an academic paragraph and transition words – will help you to demonstrate flow and a logical order to your work

Read around critical analysis and how you can demonstrate this in your writing.

Make sure you understand what synthesis, evaluation and application are so you can demonstrate in your writing.

Look at the introduction to the module.

Look at the marking grid and level 4 grading criteria. These are the tools used to Grade your assignment. You can use these to assess your work.

Revisit the Harvard referencing system via the library website.

Ensure you understand how you can provide evidence for any statements you make.

Consider if you feel confident in using NELSON. If not seek support from the academic librarians.
Consider what you have learned in the module with regard to Asepsis, Infection Control, patient involvement and how and why you apply this to practice. Undertake further reading around the subjects.

If you are unsure seek support from your personal tutor and /or module lead. You can send 10% of your work to your marker for feedback prior to submission.
