Jabberwocky
Lesson 11 Assignment: Write brief answers (three to five sentences) to these questions: (45 points)
a.Read Carroll’s “Jabberwocky” (page 558) aloud. Read it a second time to an audience (of any age–young, if possible), exaggerating the expression that your knowledge of English lets you read into the nonsense words. What did you learn from the experience?
b.Lukens says that the rhythm, sound patterns, figurativeness, compactness, and emotional intensity differentiate poetry from prose. Explain what each of these means and give an example from one of the poems in the chapter.
c.For practice in analyzing the meaning of poetry, paraphrase the following poem. Write it out line by line, being sure to capture every idea it contains. (Make your paraphrase as comprehensive as the paraphrase of Hughes’ “Dream Deferred,” in the lesson, p. 575) Don’t interpret the poem; just recapture its ideas in different words. Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride* (*path)
Wearing white for Eastertide.
Now, of my threescore years and ten,
Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more.
And since to look at things in bloom
Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands I will go
To see the cherry hung with snow.
A . E. Housman
