Information for Journal Article Presentations

The presentation is aimed at giving you experience at carefully reading a journal
article that relates to one of the general topics of the course, and summarising its main
points, and its relevance to the class through an oral presentation of 10-15 minutes (no
more than 15 minutes – you will be asked to stop at 15 minutes).
You may use a visual aid (power point presentation, or handout) to go with your oral
presentation. This will suit some articles more than others.
You also need to submit a short written summary in paragraph form of the main
points of the article upon which your talk was based (about 1000 words).
In preparing your oral presentation, you need to summarise the main points of the
article, including:
a) the goal(s) of the study – what is it trying to achieve?
b) the way it fits in with the overall topic of that week (eg. Variation, style,
accommodation, multilingualism, etc)
c) the theoretical and methodological framework used in the study
d) the nature of the data examined
e) results and conclusions of the study.
You should also prepare at least one discussion point for the tutorial group. This could
be a section or finding of the article you found particularly interesting, or one that you
found particularly confusing (there is no shame in being confused). You could raise a
critique of the article – eg. a limitation with its methodology, a point that you felt was
not well argued, etc.
Criteria for assessment include:
a) demonstration of understanding of the key points of the article discussed (in oral
presentation and in summary): 10 marks
b) clarity and logical progression of the oral presentation, including capacity to keep
to the time constraints: 7 marks
c) appropriateness of the discussion point to the topic and to the article: 3 marks
d) appropriate academic style in written summary: 5 marks
