Network Utilities
Prepare this assignment according to the GCU Style Guide located in the Student Success Center.
You are required to submit this assignment to Turnitin. Please refer to the directions in the Student Success Center.
Directions: Find and install (if needed) free network utility/utilities, or use online utilities, such as CentralOps (http://centralops.net/co) for your computer
platform. Use utilities like Ping, Tracert, ARP/RARP, IPConfig, Whois, NSLookup, and WireShark. Responsibly explore network traffic and performance in the available
networks such as, the classroom network, school LAN, WAN, and Internet using these network utilities. Identify host parameters and routes to common nodes (LAN, WAN,
and Internet)Write a (500-750 words) summary of your findings including at least two supporting references.Include the following types of characteristics as applicable
from any one of the networks explored (LAN, WAN, and Internet):Brief description of topology (to the extent known)
Total amount of traffic observed among 2-3 nodes of interest
Average traffic observed among 2-3 nodes of interest
Traffic peaks with an explanation. If cause is not known, state an assumption and make a plausible guess
A list of all hops between your computer and a server of interest
Latency observed in responses to pings from your computer to a server of interest
Percentage of information (packets) lost in traffic
An overall, holistic, descriptive assessment (yours) of the performance of the network
An interesting factoid you observed, not listed above
Identify one characteristic that exhibits significant distinction about the networks explored.Quantify the distinction using the relevant measurement unit. Explain
what do you think is the source of the observed differences? How significant are they (use descriptive statistics such as percentages or variances)?Use tables and
charts to appropriately illustrate and present the raw data and summary of your findings.
