For this discussion, you will be asked to get into the habit of following the news. The list of sources, national and international, all English-language, is available under the Course Administration Section: Start Here. You’re welcome to use other sources, but I would suggest checking their validity with me—not that I am an ultimate know-it-all, but I would be able to give you a suggestion of what to avoid.

Find three news articles that are reporting on various political developments in the world—that’s a very wide scope, so don’t limit yourself. If you’re not sure if something qualifies—check with me.

Make sure that the articles you’re using are truly news articles, reporting on what is happening, rather than opinion pieces or analysis articles.

Please post short summaries of three news articles (NO OPINION PIECES!). Of course, you need to provide links and appropriate citations. Those articles cannot be more than a month old. You may not focus solely on your state or locality–please diversify a bit and look at what is happening around the US. While it is very important to keep track of your local and state news, it is equally important to know what’s going on in the US and in the world.

I also strongly suggest to diversify your news sources. Don’t just use one–see what other sources are saying, how different countries are reporting on the news in the US, what are they reporting on, how they are reporting it–see if you can detect any significant differences in bias. For example, how are Germany or China reporting on the recent elections in the US?

NO “copy and paste” of articles in lieu of summary will be tolerated!

Students need to use their own words and cite the information thoroughly. Everything else short of appropriate use of material will be considered plagiarism and treated accordingly.

After you briefly summarize the articles, you need to write an analytical paragraph talking about: importance of those events, effects, potential complications, continuations, solutions, etc. As you’re analyzing those events, start your process by using the concepts and theories we have been studying. For this discussion, please use the material from Chapter 14. Begin your analysis with definitions, and show how you can use those concepts and ideas to understand what is happening and how we can put those events in the larger context.

Your analysis doesn’t mean saying: “This article connects with elections or foreign policy.” That’s not sufficient. You need to show HOW it connects, HOW the concepts apply, HOW they explain the issues. In other words, focus on the causal links and application.

For that last section, you MUST use and cite the readings from your textbook.
