Purpose: To demonstrate understanding of the biological, psychological, sociocultural, and life-cycle forces of development

Directions: In the excerpt of his book Between the World and Me, Ta’Nahisi Coates writes about key experiences and influences of his life. He writes about family
members’ behaviors, cultural attitudes, interactions with social institutions (e.g., school), and his own choices. These experiences shaped Coates, and they influence
his thoughts, emotions, and actions to this day. In your lab section, you have discussed this excerpt and identified the forces of development (i.e., biological,
psychological, sociocultural, and life-cycle forces) that have influenced Coates’ life.

In this reflection paper—just like in the excerpt from Coates’ book—you will reflect on your own life and how you came to be where you are now.

Before writing, first reflect on your life. Think about key experiences you had growing up and how those experiences affected your cognitive, physical, and
socioemotional development. How did these experiences shape your opportunities? Your interactions with others? Your sense of self? What impact might these experiences
have on you today? (For example, maybe getting very positive feedback about writing in 6th grade made you seek out more opportunities to write. This boosted your
experiences with and confidence about writing, and now you are an English major). What cultures do you belong to (think about your religious/spiritual group,
socioeconomic status, region of country, nationality, immigration status, race/ethnicity, physical ability, gender, and sexual orientation)? How did you learn about
“your” groups? Have the choices you made conformed with those groups’ values and norms, or have you made choices that went against those groups’ values and norms? What
was the response from the group? What were your primary and secondary school experiences like? What kinds of extracurricular opportunities were offered?

After your reflection, notice how the four forces of development were present in your key experiences. In a 3-page paper, identify/define the forces of development and
describe how they have influenced your own life. Please note: not everything you thought about in the reflection will be included in the paper.

Specifics: Your paper must include definitions, descriptions, and examples from your life of each of the four forces of development.
