Assignment 5: Final Assignment
For the final assignment you will chose a social issue/problem (I will list some possible examples below) and use the theories you learned this term to explain that
problem.
With the exception of an introduction and conclusion, your paper should have the following 4 parts:
Part 1:
Pick a social issue/problem. Once you have chosen a social issue/problem you will research and summarize your social problem in 1-2 pages. You might want to include
the history and development of the social problem.
Part 2:
Pick 2 theorists from chapters 2-5 ( Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, Georg Simmel) and discuss how each of those theorists would examine/explain the social
issue/problem. Be sure to include major concepts/perspectives from these theorists to support your argument. For example, why would Marx explain poverty in our
society? What concepts would he include to explain/examine poverty? (This should be approximately 4 pages)
Part 3:
Pick 2 theories from chapters 7-12(Systems theory, conflict theory, Varieties of neo-Marxian theories, Symbolic Interactionism, Modern Sociological theory,
Ethnomethodology, Exchange..network..and rational choice theories, Contemporary feminist theory) and discuss how each of those theories would examine/explain the
social issue/problem. Be sure to include major concepts/perspectives from these theories to support your argument. For example, if you are going to go with the
education system in our society, you might use structural functionalism and tell us how this perspective might look at the education system, such as the
manifest/latent functions of the education system? (This should be approximately 4 pages)
Part 4:
Compare and contrast each theory/theorist and how they would explain/examine the social issue/problem. Finally, discuss how these theories/theorists would develop ways
of dealing with potential disruptive effects of the social issue/problem. (This should be approximately 3-4 pages)
In addition to following APA format, your paper should be between 12-15 pages (not including the Title and Reference pages).
