(Goode)4. According to Casper & Bianchi what are 2 pros and 2 cons of cohabitation? 5. What is individualized marriage? How is it different from previous eras of the
family? (Cherlin)PART 2: Short essay (4-5 sentences) Answer 3 of the 4 options 5 points each1. Regnerus and Uecker explore individual factors driving divorce
and Friedman explores social factors that drove the divorce rate up. In a paragraph summarize the individual and social factors of divorce. 2. According to Mintz how
is childhood a social cultural construct? 3. Briefly explain two of the four strains on the modern family. Make sure you explain the causes of these strains (Cowan &
Cowan).4. While comparing and contrasting research on divorce Rutter compares and contrast the economic impact of divorce and the emotional impact of divorce. Briefly
summarize each of these areas of research. Which one does Rutter think is a better representation of the effects of divorce? Why?
PART 3: Long essay (10-12 sentences) Answer 2 of the 4 options 10 points each1. In the book intro Skolnick and Skolnick lay out a number of myths of the
family, Mintz described myths of childhood, and Ahrons explores the myths of divorce. Choose two sets of myths to compare and contrast. Discuss how the myths
compliment/ inform each other and/or contradict each other. For each set of comparisons choose one myth from at least two of the readings. For example you could
compare and contrast the Myth of a Stable Past (Skolnick & Skolnick) and Myth of Progress/Decline (MIntz). 2. Rutter introduces us to the term Moral Entrepreneur.
Briefly explain this term. Then find two examples of moral entrepreneurship in two readings from the first four topics of the class. Summarize these examples and
explain how they are related to concept of Moral Entrepreneur. 3. Regnerus and Uecker explore young people’s perceptions of sex and marriage. Briefly summarize these
perceptions. Also explain how young men and young women compare and contrast in their perceptions. Use the Cherlin, Simon and Rutter readings to discuss how their
research does or does not support young people’s perceptions of divorce and marriage. 4. In the book introduction Skolnick and Skolnick argue modern families have
experienced a triple revolution. Briefly explain two of the factors of the triple revolution. Next use evidence from the remaining material to supports their claim.
Use a different reading for each factor you focus on. PART 4: Bonus (4-5 sentences) Answer as Many as You Want 2.5 points each1. BONUS: In the readings
there is a lot of discussion regarding individualism and modern family structures. Why is individualism so important to understanding the modern family? 2. BONUS:
Put on your sociological imagination cap. A lot of the readings propose public policies as a way to address many of problems families incur in modern society. Why is
there such a strong emphasis on social policy compared to individual responsibility? This is not a political question, so a political answer is not acceptable. You
need to think of the frame of sociology and use that to answer this question.
