“Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin – Language Aspects (including figures of speech, irony, and symbolism)
Description:
1- Begin with a short plot summary, with present tense verbs, and a general theme or
central idea statement-
2- Find a smooth transition from the central idea to language aspects found in the
story- [Example: Language aspects in this story can help a reader interpret and
understand the author‘s implied attitude and intended theme-]
3. Focus on the different language aspects, probably in separate paragraphs- it may
be possible that all of the various language aspects are not of equal importance-
Make a special effort to include examples of figu’es of speech irony, and symbolism if
at all possible-
4- Finish the paper with a brief conclusion about how effectively the author has used
the language aspects in the story- Did the language aspects create a problem in
reading the story, or did they make the story better?
