SPSS Assignment
PART I:
An investigator is interested in predicting scores for a measure of cognitive function from the number of hours of sleep a person gets on average. She obtains scores for both the number of hours of sleep and cognitive function from 12 people. Higher scores for cognitive function reflect higher levels of performance.

Use SPSS as needed to complete the following:
1. Create an SPSS data file with the data above.

2. Write the null and alternative hypotheses for the relationship between sleep and cognitive functioning.

3. Compute r. What is the correlation coefficient between the number of hours of sleep and scores on the measure of cognitive function?

4. Is the correlation coefficient significantly different from zero? What is the significance level for this test? What conclusion should the investigator draw on the basis of this test with regard to the null hypothesis?

5. What is the regression equation used to obtain predicted scores for cognitive function from the number of hours of sleep? Using the regression equation, what will the predicted score for cognitive function be if a person reports that they get 6.7 hours of sleep? What are the standardized regression coefficients?

6. Does the amount of sleep account for a significant amount of variability in scores for cognitive function?

7. What is the standard error of estimate? What information does this number provide about the use of the regression equation for this data set?

8. Use SPSS to create a scatterplot with the number of hours of sleep on the X-axis and scores for cognitive function on the Y-axis. Please have SPSS display the regression line within this scatterplot.

9. Using the APA Results section sample provided in Lesson 33 on page 282 of Green and Salkind as a model, write an APA Results section for this set of analyses. Be sure to include the scatterplot as a figure and format everything according to APA.

PART 2:

For this part, you will complete two separate investigations: one that uses independent and dependent/paired t-tests. As in previous assignments, please turn in APA-style results sections as a Word document. Use a page break to separate the independent and dependent t-test sections.

T-tests
A teacher is interested in knowing whether different students in her class have different levels of statistics knowledge at the beginning of the course and whether they gain knowledge in statistics over the course of her class. She administered a survey to all of her students asking whether they are pursuing a masters degree or Ph.D. (“Degree”) and entered that information along with their scores on a statistics pre-test (“PreTest”). At the end of the course, she administered the same test again and entered their scores (“PostTest”).

1. Use StatPrePost.sav to answer the following questions:
Is there a difference between masters degree students and Ph.D. students in terms of statistics knowledge at the beginning of the course?
Is there a significant difference between students’ statistics knowledge at the beginning and the end of the course?
2. Determine whether an independent samples or dependent/paired samples t-test should be used.
3. Run the appropriate t-test (include Levene’s test for homogeneity of variances for the independent t-test). Identify the obtained t value. What is the significance level for this test? What conclusion should the investigator draw on the basis of this test with regard to the null hypothesis if the alpha is set at .05?
4. Compute the effect size d (by hand as shown in your respective SPSS Lesson). What level of magnitude is this effect?

Using the APA Results section sample provided in the lessons as a model, write an APA Results section for each investigation.
