Complete a discussion on the ethical issues related to stem cell research. Also reply to the students’ post below.

Stem cell research has always raised emotional ethical controversies. In the general public and in the scientific community, people on both sides of the issue disagree on stem cell from embryos, from adult tissues or from other such alternative possibilities that could lead to therapeutic treatments of complex incurable diseases. People who favor this process firmly believe that using stem cells in any forms in biological and medical research will eventually unlock the physiological secrets of genetic disorders that originally create the formation of these diseases. By uncovering their mysterious formations, humanity has the moral duty to discover medical treatments for individuals suffering from these chronic diseases ounce and for all.

However, staunch opponents of this view argue that human cellular materials should never be utilized as a means to justify any ends. Although they may recognize its potential usefulness, they reject the idea that any physiological human cellular organs should be disrespected, dishonored or sacrificed for the sole purposes of curing other human organisms. For them, biomedical research can be essential for the progress of medicine in our society. But this particular research despite its great intentions of generating good treatments, does not still hold enough moral justifications, essentially when this involves human subjects.

As we can see, we are confronted to a moral dilemma between two ethical principles: our duty to alleviate human suffering from incurable chronic diseases, and the one that respects and values our human life. However, multiple historical events remind of detrimental harms that afflicted humanity when we hastily engaged in technologically advances at the expenses of other societal needs. Therefore, the most important ethical issue should be this: any scientific endeavor involving stem cell research should have the ultimate moral obligation to preserve the human race from its unintended catastrophic destruction.
