Summative Assignment
Your assignment is to run any necessary analyses to the answer the proposed research questions and then write up Chapter 4 of this student’s dissertation. This chapter
is really about reporting what happened. Chapter 4 does not really discuss the results of each research question except to lay the groundwork for a more in-depth
discussion in Chapter 5
Before you do anything you should make sure that there is nothing wrong with the data. These data do not have any missingness or outliers, so you do not need to worry
about these. You do need to check the following:
• The student self-efficacy instrument (3 variables outlined on the next page) is supposed to be unidimensional. Run a principal components analysis to
determine if this is the case. Get factor scores on the factor (or factors if that is what you find).
• The study skills instrument is supposed to have three dimensions (detailed on the next page). Run a principal components analysis to determine if this is the
case. Get factor scores on the factors that result. Note that I said it is supposed to have three factors, but you cannot force that if that is not what you find.
In general the chapter should go through the following steps:
• First tell the story of who the participants in the study are. This is done using graphs, tables and words. There should never be redundant information
presented. For example, you do not put in a table of county demographic information and then repeat the same information in a paragraph beneath the table. It is
permissible, however, to draw the reader’s attention to important or interesting statistics from the table.
• If a survey was used but the analysis of that survey was not a research question, discuss the analysis of that survey next. For the purpose of this assignment,
that means addressing the student self-efficacy instrument, and the study habits instrument.
• Then take each research question individually and explain what the results are.
Research questions:
1. Are there differences between students at different levels (freshmen, sophomores, junior and senior) in terms of their study skills?
2. Does participating in an on-line course provide students with better study skills?
3. Is there a relationship between student self-efficacy and study habits?
This assignment should not exceed 10 pages double-spaced, including figures and tables. APA style must be evident in the reporting of all statistics and configuration
of tables and figures.
Demographic information:
• Gender
• Age
• Year in school
• Ethnicity
• Whether student participates in an on-line course
Three questions were asked that were supposed to tap into student self-efficacy
• How confident are you in your course content ability? (1 = not confident at all, 4 = extremely confident)
• How confident are you in your ability to learn new material? (1 = not confident at all, 4 = extremely confident)
• You prefer course material that really challenges you so you can learn (1 = strongly disagree, 4 = strongly agree)
Twelve questions were asked that tapped into three dimensions measuring study skills (all used a four-point Likert scale with 1 = strongly disagree, 4 = strongly
agree)
Dimension/factor 1: Environment
• You study in a location without distractions
• You choose to work in a comfortable place
• You have all the necessary materials when you study
Dimension/factor 2: Conscientiousness
• You set standards for your assignments
• Your set short-term (daily or weekly) and long-term goals
• You never compromise the quality of your work in any courses
• You do additional work to master the course material
• You allocate extra study time when you know content is demanding
• Although you do not attend daily classes, you still try to distribute study time evenly
Dimension/factor 3: Help from others
• You find someone knowledgeable so that you can consult with him/her when necessary
• You often seek out help from your teachers
• You regularly participate in study groups
