Perception of health-related quality of life in children with chronic kidney disease by the patients
and their caregivers: Multicenter national study results.
This multicenter cross-sectional national study was conducted to determine the insights of
health related quality of life in children with chronic kidney disease. (CKD)
Demographic and social data were evaluated. A total of 203 CKD children on hemodialysis, peritoneal
dialysis and conservative treatment (CT) and their 388 parent/proxies participated in the study. To
assess the HRQoL in children. Pediatric Quality of Life (PedsQL) 4.0 inventory core scale was used.

took part in the study. The study was performed amongst patients and their parent/proxies from Sept to
December of 2011. Participants included children over 2years of age, with stage II of CKD who were
diagnosed 3months before the study started.
Children who were excluded were those who had severe mental illness, organ transplantation, cancer,
patients who have been hospitalized within 2 weeks, any change in hemodialysis regimen, or any
unrelated disease such as having a death in the family. Patient were divided according to their
treatment modalities such as Peritoneal dialysis and Hemodialysis

The aim or the main goal of the study was to examine HRQoL in Polish children with CKD, keeping
in consideration the stage and treatment for CKD, and also some of the life conditions of their
families. The study also assessed any possible differences in patients and parent/proxy report and any
conditions that affected them.
They indicated that using HRQoL measurement related to CKD children is quite new. It stated that there
are studies that have been inconclusive. They used the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 Generic
Core Scale to assess the HRQoL in children.
Eijsermans et al indicated that the seeming QoL in children receiving dialysis and the general
population is not any different.
Another research by Gerson et al indicated that in comparison with control subject, The expected
outcome of this study was to help gain insights on the impact of CKD on the functional health condition
of children and to determine when and how to help CKD patients improve their quality of life.
The study concluded that the HRQoL in children with CKD is less than in children who are healthy. As
indicated it is more notable at the early stage of the disease. Also children are usually overcome by
the effects of the disease itself, therefore making it difficult for them to participate in their care.

lll Evaluation of the intervention of this research can help gain insight as to how best
we can care for children with CKD. The study indicated that, lack of significant differences in
perception of emotional functioning influence the disease. Intervention such as providing psychological
help is necessary.
The methodologies defined in this study provided a useful outline that can help patients live a healthy
life style.
Nurse need to help patients maintain quality self-care practices to sustain life and health to help
patients cope with the effects of their diseases.
