The Interpretation of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel The Judgment

Things to remember when writing about art:
• Look at your artwork(s) long and hard and see what insights, observations and questions come to your mind first. Your paper must originate from the object; it should set the terms of your discussion
• Convey YOUR particular assessment of this object to the reader.
• Make sure to keep in mind what significance you can draw about a culture by analyzing the style, iconography, historical context and purpose of an artwork.
What is a thesis?
• The purpose of your paper
• The idea emerges as the most promising from a number of possibilities • Made clear in your thesis in the introductory paragraph.
• Everything in your essay should be directed toward defending this thesis
Three components of a good thesis statement:
WHAT—your claim about an artwork
HOW—the events, ideas, sources, etc. that you choose to prove your claim WHY—the significance of your idea in terms of understanding the artwork as a whole
Citations in Chicago Style:
The Research Paper is an analysis with an argument (5-7 pages + bibliography and illustrations; approximately 2000 words) of artworks and cultural issues. This assignment will require research beyond the assigned course readings. Sources must be cited with properly formatted footnotes, along with a complete bibliography.
