YORK UNIVERSITY
DEPARTMENT OF VISUAL ART AND ART HISTORY
Paper and Presentation Guidelines:
2 short papers (30%) or I long paper (60%), Class Presentation (30%), Participation (10%)
IMPORTANT: 1) Unacknowledged cooperative efforts, whether in the form of essays prepared from undocumented sources or material obtained from others, will be regarded as plagiarism and will be dealt with accordingly. Quotations from sources must always be explicitly indicated by quotation marks. 2) It is a serious violation of university regulations to submit the same paper in 2 different courses and will be dealt with accordingly.
Please refer to the York Website on Academic Integrity at http://www.yorku.ca/academicintegrity/
Essays: The 2 short essays must be a minimum of 7-8 pages of analysis (excluding endnotes, bibliography and illustration which must be appended at the end of your text) and focus on ANY work from the eighteenth century to the present in ANY medium. You must analyse the specific ways in which the work that you select engages with the problem of modernity in relation to the theoretical concerns and concepts discussed by 1) Charles Baudelaire AND 2) Walter Benjamin OR Giorgio Agamben. You must make your references to the 2 writers an INTEGRAL PART of your argument rather than a few random quotations tacked onto to the opening and conclusion. In addition to these writers, you must also use at least 3 scholarly sources (books or articles) concerning the work and artist whom you choose. These must be properly referenced in either MLA or Chicago style.
You may also choose the option of writing 1 long paper instead of 2 short essays. In order to qualify, however, this paper must have a minimum of 12 pages of text, excluding endnotes, illustrations and bibliography which, again, must be appended at the end of your essay. Anything less will not be accepted as a long paper and will be counted as a short essay in the final grading scheme.
Presentations: Presentations should be 10 minutes in length and focus on the subject of one of your papers. They should include projected visual materials. You should also send me a 1 page summary of your argument with a brief bibliography on the day of your presentation. All presentations should be well prepared, well written, and well rehearsed.
Deadlines:

Wednesday, 2 December, 2015: Second Short Essay or Long Paper Due.
Presentations will take place between early November and early December.
