Choose one of the following two essay topics for your paper:
1) Compare and contrast the use of the psycho mom character in Alejandro Jodorowsky’s film Santa Sangre with Alfred Hitchcock’s film Psycho. How does Jodorowsky’s use of the psycho mom character within his specific narrative and film genre function (work, operate) in similar ways with Hitchcock’s? More importantly, in what ways does it function differently? (A good paper will go beyond the similarities and differences in the plot.)
In what ways does the psycho mom character in both films operate within the dynamics of a trotter/son relationship? In what ways is it different? What do you think Jodorowsky is trying to do in reimagining Ilitchcock’s classic?
2) Choose one film from the list below and form a thesis/argument to answer the following questions: How is ‘motherhood’ represented in the film? Why do you think the film engages with topics related to motherhood, mother/child relationships and/or gender in the film’s story? What message/agenda do you think the film constructs on these topics? Questions that may be helpful in formulating your thesis/argument: Who is the mother in the film? How is the plot driven by the mother character? In what ways does the mother character operate within the film’s genre? How does the psychotic behavior of the mother influence the story? Motherhood is often represented as biologically female and gcndcrcd feminine, does the film uphold or subvert this cinetnatic stereotype?
