Topic Inventory
The paper lists three topics from each of the four categories; namely, academic subjects, social issue, scientific subject and cultural background. The topics
are based on interest of the researcher. Furthermore, it highlights the controlling idea for a chosen topic and a short research proposal.
Part 1: Topic Inventory
Category: Academic subject
Personal interest: Environment
Possible academic topics:
The fate of the big five animals; are the conversation measures worth their benefits?
The impact of global warming on economic and social development in the twenty first century

Personal interest: African-American Cultures
Possible academic topics:

The impact of culture on the creativity of African-Americans
Part 2: Controlling Idea Statement
Among the possible academic topics listed, the most appealing is, “the impact of the racial composition of the police department on perception of minority groups in
the United States of America. The controlling idea statement is a hypothesis that states; there is no relationship between the racial composition of the police
department and the perception of the minority groups in the United States of America.
Part 3: Short Proposal
The short proposal is about the topic “The impact of the composition of the police department on perception of minority groups in the United States of
America”. The topic is relevant for research because of the recent upsurge of white police officers shooting and killing unarmed African-Americans (Swaine, Laughland,
& Lartey, 2015, par.1). The upsurge of racist motivated killing raised questions about the perception of minority groups on the racial composition of the police
department.
The research evaluates the relationship of racial composition of the police department and the unwarranted killing of African-Americans. Furthermore, it
assesses how minority groups perceive the police department dominated by white police officers. The paper argues that the racial makeup of the police department does
not affect how minority groups perceive it. The research is done by a concerned citizen and targets senior officers in the police department who are mandated to draft
policies.
