Text is: Abnormal Psychology by Susan Nolen-Hoeksema 6th edition
___
Mental disorder: Social anxiety disorder
Start off with a clear paraphrased DSM-5 criteria on social anxiety disorder
Then a literature review of empirical studies
1. look for
– treatment outcome studies: i.e., baseline assessment – treatment – post-treatment assessment – maybe follow-up period
– focus on studies using cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) (because it is the recommended therapy by the NICE guidelines
https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/cg159/chapter/1-Recommendations#interventions-for-adults-with-social-anxiety-disorder-2 )
– use general studies that look directly at how the tretament improve (or not) social anxiety or their quality of life, both immediately after treatment and in the longer terms (months/ years after)
2. make sure you do for each of the studies included
– a brief description of the studies
– evaluation of the study (strength and weakness of the design)
– is there any ethical issues using this particular design?
– how they have advanced the literature (i.e., what they have found)
3. included at least 6 studies in the literature review
4. spend some words on ethical issues too! e.g., giving participants treatment that aren’t evidence-based, and may jeopardise their improvement progress.
5. at the end conclude whether research supports the use of CBT for people with social anxiety disorder. and if there’s any caveat when using them
and future direction (wht can b e done in the future to further verify the efficacy/ effectiveness of CBT in improving social anxiety disorder
6. and all the other instructions by the lecturer.
Apa 6th referencing
The student will write a 2000-word essay on a specific mental disorder.
The essay will include diagnostic criteria (5%), research regarding recommended treatments and treatment outcomes (20%), and ethical issues regarding its definition, research and treatment (5%).
For example, one might choose Obsessive-compulsive disorder in adults and define it by paraphrasing DSM-V diagnostic criteria or from a biological perspective or a socio-cultural perspective. Relevant references that discuss studies of treatment methods and outcome will be individually described and a conclusion about what the research suggests will be included.
You have to make a judgment about how much detail to include for each study. In general, write about Who the participants were, What was done to them, When they were assessed (e.g., was it a repeated measures design?) and what the authors believe they learned from the study. The best essays have also included a brief critical evaluation of the studies they included, noting briefly some possible strengths and weaknesses and how research might be improved. The study limitations comments in articles can serve this purpose but please give the authors credit for noting the problems with their own work. See also Chapter 4 in your text on evaluating different types of research. The ethical concerns that might arise during assessment, diagnosis and treatment also need to be discussed. You might want to check out your textbook (pp. 91–92), and the APS Ethical Guidelines on clinical work and research for this bit. The order of the presentation of the material can be varied as long as all aspects of the assignment are covered. Word-limit criteria as noted above will apply.
