Why did Mom Forward this E-mail about Parking Lots?
Antonio Gramsci’s concept of “hegemony” describes power that functions through consent, and one of the best ways to identify a “hegemonic” set of ideas is to look at what we call “common sense.” For example, it was once, and still somewhat is, common sense that people from different races just don’t get along, and function best separately. This idea, in turn, supported segregation and racial hierarchy through the doctrine of “separate but equal.”For this assignment we’re going to look at an odd bit of common sense that a lot of you will be familiar with—the dangers of the parking lot. Women are given all sorts of advice about how to cross a parking lot at night—never go alone, keep your keys in your hand like you’re Wolverine or carry other weapons, check the backseat of your car before you get in, etc. It’s easy to say “well, we tell women that because it’s true,” but there’s lots of much more dangerous things that we don’t talk about with anywhere near that frequency or energy. So why is that advice so common? What does it say about how women are taught to view the world and their place in it? What does it say about men? Write 2 pages double-spaced arguing for your interpretation of the hegemonic idea or ideas that these stories communicate.
