Women Writing War – WWII
DescriptionThe course is called Women Writing War and we focused on female authors of World War II.
The essay question I chose is:
Consider the relationship between concepts of gender and the ‘enemy within’, with reference to any writer(s) on the course.
The novels I’d like to focus on are:
– Stevie Smith – ‘Over the Frontier’ (1938)
-Agatha Christie – ‘N or M?’ (1941)
-Muriel Spark – ‘The Girls of Slender Means’ (1963)
Other novels/short stories we’ve talked about during the semester and which you could possibly include if they fit the question are:
– Jean Rhys – ‘I spy a stranger’ (1941)
-Elizabeth Bowen – ‘In the Square’ (1941)
-Olivia Manning – ‘The Great Fortune’ (1965)
Secondary literature which I’d like to base the essay on are:
– Higonnet, Margaret (ed) – ‘Behind the Lines: Gender + two World Wars (1987)
– Hartley, Jenny – ‘Millions Like Us: British Women’s Fiction of Second World War (1997)
– Lassner, Phyllis – ‘British Women Writers of WWII: Battlegrounds of their own’ (1998)
– Plain, Gill – ‘Women’s Fiction of the Second World War’ (1996)
– Light, Alison – ‘Forever England: Femininity, Literature, Conservatism…Wars’ (1991)
-Showalter, Elaine – ‘The Female Malady: Women, Madness and English Culture’ (1987)
– Huk, Romana – ‘Stevie Smith, Between the Lines’ (2004)
– Suh, Judy – ‘Fascism and Anti-Fascism in Twentieth-Century British Fiction’ (2009)
– Miller, Kristine – ‘British Literature of the Blitz’ (2009)
Any further source that you may come across would be a great addition.
The first file I loaded up is the essay I’ve handed in for the same course but about WWI and this one should be in the same format. I received 54points for the first
one but I’d like this one a bit better. I know you can’t promise any grades but I just wanted to mention it.
I’m also not a native speaker, I’m German.
