MEDIEVAL EUROPE: CAROLINGIAN AND ROMANESQUE ARCHITECTURE

As we have seen through this course, religious architecture will reflect the beliefs and rituals of the users. By this point, you have seen religious building types and forms evolve as rituals, beliefs, and functions changed over time. Select two or more Carolingian and/or Romanesque floor plans that have religious functions.Research the structures and their plans. Did Greek, Roman, Byzantine, or early Christian models influence the floor plans? Why did the floor plan change over time? What rituals and beliefs affected the floor plan?Write a two- to three-page research essay (12-point font, single space). Guidelines for writing the research essay are provided below, find at least six sources and support your thoughts with citations.Diagram or find diagrams of several floor plans to illustrate your key points. Graphically illustrate your main findings regarding the evolution of the floor plan and how rituals affect the floor plan.Organization and Structure: Your two- to three-page research paper should begin with an introduction paragraph that contains your paper’s thesis. The introduction should be followed by statements and examples all designed to support your thesis. End your paper with a conclusion, which will summarize your findings and restate your thesis.Language: Correct use of the English language in terms of grammar, expression, and spelling. Use of a professional vocabulary in descriptions and analysis of architecture. The essays and research papers are required to use proper research language; they are not letters or emails. Imagine them being in a publication that collects opinions and short essays related to one specific topic published for an audience that is professionally interested.
