Theories

Theories are more than intellectual exercises. One measure of their value is their ability to help make sense of everyday life (i.e., Practical Utility). The Application Log Assignment is intended to help you link the theories you study in this class, to the world beyond this class.
Instructions Each entry should link one of the theories we have studied to an everyday life experience (A first look at communication theory) Log entries can take several different forms:
1. Descriptions of how a piece of fiction, an essay, news article, advertisement, music lyric, or cartoon illustrates the theory. Please attach a copy of the item you are explaining, if possible.

2. Descriptions of how a scene from a film or TV show illustrates the theory. You may need to very briefly describe the scene prior to applying the theory.

3. Personal reflections describing how a particular theory can help explain, predict, and/or understand some aspect of communication (from your life or others).

Format
Log entries should:
1. Include your section day/time, the due date, and your word count typed at the beginning of your Log.

2. Write your name on the back of the Log.

3. Clearly identify the theory and theorist(s) to which you are responding.

4. Highlight vocabulary terms from the theory in italics.

5. If possible contain a copy of any item to which you are referring (e.g., article, poem, cartoon, etc.).

6. MOST IMPORTANT: Analyze how the item or experience relates to the theory you have chosen.

Grading
The entire Log is worth up to 40 points. Grading is based on the following criteria:
1. How accurately did you follow the Format?

2. How accurately did you apply the theory to the item or experience?

3. How insightful and detailed is your analysis? This is the most important part. PLEASE DO
NOT SIMPLY SUMMARIZE THE THEORY. Your goal is to apply the theory.

4. How free is your Log of grammar/spelling errors?

5. FYI: The following example uses Times New Roman 12pt font, 1 inch margins all the way around, double- spaced, and it is approximately 900 words in length. Your Logs should “look” like this one.
